Family Medicine at Northwestern Medicine

Grayslake Outpatient Center

Family medicine physicians treat everyone from infants to seniors. Sometimes called family practice physicians or just family physicians, they are trained in all areas of medicine, including pediatrics and women’s health. Your family physician is able to provide your primary medical care throughout your lifetime.

Why See a Family Medicine Physician?

Family medicine physicians provide comprehensive health care for people of all ages and genders, from newborns to seniors. Like other physicians, family medicine physicians complete a three-year residency program after graduating from medical school.

In addition to diagnosing and treating illness, family medicine physicians also provide preventive care, including routine check-ups, health-risk assessments, immunizations, screening tests and personalized counseling on maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Family medicine physicians can help manage chronic illness and often coordinate care provided by other subspecialists. For common to complex conditions —from heart disease and hypertension, to diabetes, cancer and asthma — family medicine physicians provide ongoing, personalized care.

Joyce Jones-King, MD
Family Medicine Resident

Northwestern Medicine Family Medicine at Grayslake Outpatient Center offers the only family medicine residency program in Lake County, Illinois.

What is a resident physician?

Residents are physicians who have graduated from medical school, earned the degree of Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), and have met all the requirements to continue their graduate medical education in order to become board-certified physicians.

What do resident physicians do?

Residents care for patients just like other physicians, performing the same duties.

Who supervises resident physicians?

At Grayslake Outpatient Center, residents are supervised by faculty who are fully licensed, board-certified physicians, often referred to as attending physicians.

If I am seen by a resident, will I receive the same level of care as other patients at Grayslake Outpatient Center?

Yes. Residents work together with the attending physician who will confirm the diagnosis and ensure the most appropriate course of treatment is recommended for you. The attending physician may ask you additional questions and give you more information. This means, if you are seen by a resident, you are being cared for by a team of physicians.
